Bad decisions have finally caught up with police detective Karen Seagate. Her drinking has destroyed her marriage and hurt her job performance, and the chief is looking for any excuse to fire her. Still, she and her new partner, a young Mormon guy who seems to have arrived from another century or another planet, intend to track down whoever killed Arlen Hagerty, the corrupt leader of Soul Savers. Clawing his way to the top, Hagerty created plenty of enemies, including his wife, his mistress, his debate partner, the organization’s founder, and the politician he was blackmailing. When Seagate causes a car crash that sends a young girl to Intensive Care, the chief thinks he finally has his opportunity. But even the chief can’t believe what Seagate does when she finally catches the killer.

Karen Seagate is a hot mess.
An alcoholic, she has lost custody of her teenage son to her ex-husband and his girlfriend - who isn't much older than her son. She is bitter, cynical, and - because she's one of the few women on the Rawlings, Montana police force - she's learned to counter the inherent sexism and misogyny she encounters daily with sarcasm and even cruelty when it comes to the not-so-gentle art of conversational combat.
She's also a pretty good detective.
Taken all together, that makes her a fascinating character; one of the most intriguing I've encountered in awhile.
"Big Sick Heart" is the first in a series of mystery novels featuring Seagate and her erstwhile young partner Det. Ryan Miner. Theirs is an unlikely partnership: Where she is cynical, he is perpetually optimistic. She drinks too much, he doesn't drink at all. She's divorced, he's happily married. She is not religious, he is a devout Mormon. Despite their differences, and some bumps along the road, they make their partnership work as they try to discover who murdered a prominent evangelical campaigner against stem cell research.
Author Mike Markel has blended a couple of styles in his narrative. At times, his pages read like an old episode of "Dragnet." There are many no-nonsense, police procedural scenes, for example. Later, however, he switches into deeply introspective first-person narratives on life, love, loss, and grief. It's an interesting technique and I'm not quite sure that everyone can pull it off as well as Markel does, What I am sure of is that it makes this novel a real pleasure to read.
Markel also has a wry sense of humor, which is especially evident when he is writing about Seagate's interactions with some of the novel's secondary characters. He doesn't overdo it, but - instead - gives readers just enough levity to lighten the narrative in a novel about a brutal murder.
The plotting is intricate but, again, not overdone. There are some red herrings in the mix, which is always a good thing in a murder mystery, but they add flavor to the story without becoming so distracting that the reader gets lost. The ending is not entirely unexpected, but Markel tells it in a compelling way that makes it - in my opinion - special.
The verdict: A really excellent read for those that like offbeat stories set in offbeat locales featuring very intriguing characters.

Big Sick Heart A Detectives Seagate and Miner Mystery edition by Mike Markel Mystery Thriller Suspense eBooks Reviews

Big Sick Heart A Detectives Seagate and Miner Mystery ( Detectives Seagate and Miner Mysteries #1) by Mike Markel is a 2014 publication.

This novel had the nerve to tackle some pretty controversial issues. Stem cell research is of course hotly debated with people firmly on one side or the other. The debate can get really heated. Amazingly, this novel manages to pull off a mystery surrounding the complications of stem cell research without stepping on a hornet's nest.

Here is the set up
Detective Karen Seagate and Detective Ryan Miner are partners working to solve the murder of a man, Arlen Hargerty, whose public stance on stem cell research and leader of a group called “Soul Savers” may have made him a few enemies. While on the lecture circuit with his wife, assistant and debate partner , Arlen is found murdered. The suspects are plenty as we will discover when the murder victim's corruption comes to light as well as his extramarital affair. Wife? Mistress? Debate Partner? All are suspects, but the deeper the detectives dig, the more enemies they uncover, each with equally compelling motives.

My thoughts

I would never have dreamed of paring Seagate and Miner as partners. I have a thing for the darker side of a character and I happen to like when a detective has real life problems on top of job pressures. It gives the book a gritty and more realistic feel. Karen is a woman struggling for respect in her male dominated profession, she is divorced, and has lost custody of her son. She has taken to indulging in booze as a way to cope which of course is not the answer. So, it almost seems ironical when she is paired with Minor, a fresh faced Mormon with a wife and kids, who lives life on the straight and narrow path. These detectives couldn't be more different from one another. It's a startling contrast and so I thought it was interesting.
The detectives uncover a sordid game of politics, bribery, and big money which will eventually force the already troubled Seagate into a gut wrenching and controversial decision. However, Seagate with the staunch support of her partner will start to realize she has to pull it together because she has a son and no matter what she needs to be present for him.
First books in a series are often difficult for me, and to my knowledge this is the first published book by this author. I had no idea what to expect. Setting characters up in what will most likely be recurring roles for future installments and still getting a crime solved is a difficult balance for even the most seasoned authors. Karen's personality and her problems almost overwhelmed the story is many cases, as her character was the most predominant. Some religious themes were in this one and I tend to shy away from those, but it was handled well, sticking the beliefs clearly onto the character, so it didn't become preachy. In fact Miner could be pretty funny. I thought the plot was an ambitious undertaking for a first in a series novel. It could have gotten out of control but the author kept it all on an even keel wrapping it all up and leaving us to wonder what will be next for this rather unconventional detective team. I have book two loaded up and ready to go! Overall this one gets 4 stars.
